Chapter Fifteen

Ava felt a knot building in the pit of her stomach the closer they got to Easton. Thankfully, Jenna was quiet on the flight back. Ava felt like she needed time to think. Rather than having time alone or time to think as she had planned, the past two weeks had made her life even more complex.

Post flight shutdown took a little longer than usual. The flight tower had received some bomb threats earlier in the day so the Easton defense system had logged an orange alert, requiring extra security shutdown procedures. Orange alerts had become more common in the past few weeks as the insurgents set off small explosions in various parts of the city. So far, no one had been killed and no one had been captured and held for the crimes. The residents of Easton, like other cloud cities where small acts of vandalism had happened, didn’t seem to take the threats very seriously. The insurgents’ message was muddy at best, a rally cry against capitalism. The ruling party had assured residents that no real harm could be organized by such a small group of malcontents. Ava’s general opinion was the radicals were simply unhappy with their assigned rank in the city. Well, not everyone could be at the top. Who would be left to take the trash out? If they really wanted to change their status they should work for it, not blow things up.

As Ava walked toward the transit center to catch a train to her residential cube, she sent Audrey a message to say she was back. She asked Audrey for enough of a head start to take a shower and freshen up before they were to meet. After she received a reply in the affirmative, Ava realized that for the first time the power balance in their friendship had shifted. Ava had always been the one to move closer or pull away from Audrey, controlling the pace and level of intimacy between them. Ava was no longer in control of where their relationship was heading. Relinquishing control was not one of Ava’s favorite positions to be in.

Ava arrived at home, dropped her flight gear by the door, and headed for a hot shower.
